Paper Reuse Project

Abstract:
The goal is to reduce the amount of paper waste on campus by adopting sustainable cradle to cradle processes. This can be accomplished by altering the pay scale for Pay-to-Print, implementing an official campus policy for double-sided printing, making all computer labs default to double sided printing and collect single sided paper and reuse it for notebooks and printing on the blank side.
Problem Statement:
In fall of 2009, Humboldt computer labs consumed 2,637,137 toner sheets. A year later this statistic dropped to 1,900,696 and under 1,000,00 the following year. These students conducted a survey to better understand the paper use behaviors of staff and faculty on campus. Previously only three studies have been done on the paper waste at Humboldt and all three of them looked at the impacts of paper consumption on the environment. This study explores ways in which the university can decrease its paper waste and consumption.
