Abstract:
This document is a proposal for a Sustainable Agriculture course to be taught at Humboldt. It documents the need for the course and the student and faculty interest on the topic. It also documents the progress that has been made as well as where the proposal currently stands. There is a list of resources of people who are willing to collaborate with the course as well as their information. This document shows how the course would complement the curriculums of the Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, and Environmental Management and Protection programs. In the appendix you will find a proposed syllabus for the course along with related syllabus from previous and existing course. A new course proposal form and curriculum change form are attached as well. We hope that this document allows for continuation of the proposal submission and ultimately results in the offering a sustainable agriculture course.
Problem Statement:
Cal Poly Humboldt currently offers no required courses on sustainable agriculture, while at the same time declaring itself as a school that promotes environmental sustainability. The goal of this project is propose a curriculum for a sustainable agriculture course that will promote environmentally sound agricultural practices and teach potential farmers organic farming methods, thus allowing Humboldt and its students a broader understanding of sustainability, and teach environmental responsibility while tying together the environment with human needs.
