Abstract:
The goal is to make events on the Arcata Plaza zero waste by January 2014. Objectives for this goal include reducing the amount of compostable waste by 10%, reducing recycling and landfill waste by 50% and reducing the amount of recycling and landfill waste from all events by 90%. This will be done through the use of zero-waste vendors, permanent composting bins located on the plaza, and a compostable dishware requirement for all vendors at Arcata Plaza events.
Problem Statement:
Waste generated at large events on the Arcata Plaza contributes to environmental degradation. The environmental degradation is a result of waste being land filled and recycled. Land filling and recycling require energy, transportation and the use of natural resources.
